Our Progress

Since July 2004 the Missouri Naval Museum has been busy surveying and researching the idea of bringing a naval museum to Jefferson City. We have considered multiple site locations, identified which ships we would most like to acquire, and begun consultations regarding the planning and design of our facilities.

Phase I (planning) of the project is complete and it is now time to begin implementing our plans, pushing us closer to realizing our goal. We have identified our desired location on the Jefferson City Riverfront at the former Missouri State Penitentiary and have had a preliminary site assessment conducted. In July 2007, our request to locate at the former Prison was approved (click here to read the approval letter). We hope to make our first maintenance inspection of the ships this fall.

The Museum has determined it will cost between $2 and $5 Million to complete Phase II (Site and ship acquisition, and facility construction). In addition to two fundraisers held in 2006, the Museum is seeking grant assistance from the MFA Oil and Union Pacific Foundations. The time for action is now. We are looking for tax-deductible contributions, but can always use volunteers. If you have a special skill or can assist the museum in other ways please contact us!
